We The Pious

We the pious
march steadily on
to church bowed to the earth while
the sun smiles at the backs of our heads
as at Constantine.

We the pious
celebrate the gift,
tree, and man-in-heaven
of Christ’s birth in cold
Decembers.

We the pious
clean our cups
and plates with platitudes
of godliness hanging from our walls
like phylacteries.
